Honey is one of the only sweeteners in the world that can be eaten exactly as nature makes it. Unlike cane sugar, stevia, or syrups, raw honey doesn’t require industrial refinement, chemical alteration, or additives to be sweet and safe to consume. It’s simply collected, filtered to remove wax and debris, and ready to use.

Here’s how honey compares to other common sweeteners:

Cane sugar must be crushed, boiled, clarified with lime or carbon dioxide, crystallized, bleached, and dried.

Agave syrup is extracted from the agave plant and often processed with heat and enzymes to convert starches into sugar (similar to high-fructose corn syrup).

Maple syrup is boiled extensively to concentrate the sugars.

Stevia and monk fruit often undergo chemical extraction with solvents or alcohols, and are sometimes combined with erythritol or fillers to balance taste and texture.

High-fructose corn syrup is chemically processed using enzymes to convert glucose to fructose.
